Renato
was born in Mexico City in 1971 and at the age of 15,
after years of uncertainty with regards to his direction
in life, learned the art of clay sculpting from his
uncle Ariel Ortega, master ceramist. During the next
few years his passion for the arts began to emerge,
resulting in an incontrolable need to express himself.

During
those early years of experimentation, exploration and
discovery, the Artist worked with different techniques
and mediums in the realms of terracota and stoneware.
As a result, a distinct style emerged which he called
"Organic Growth". Parallel to this was Renato´s
very personal feelings on ecology and the general lack
of real interest shown by the world population
towards saving our planet. For him, the earth is a living
being of which we humans are only minute cells. Thus,
driving our planet to extinction is nothing less than
suicide. This view is now expressed through some of
Renato´s work.
In
1993 Renato invented a stonelike material, or stucco,
which he called Novapiedra (new stone).
That enabled him to carve monuments, fountains and murals
in great detail.
Working on Mayan Art through the years, with people
from the region, he has been able to train a group of
native artists and craftsmen who have attained great
mastery, dedication and passion for the task of interpreting
and carving his art and that of their ancestors.
In
1996 he identified a need in himself to express Mayan
and Caribbean Art in a new and a fresh way. This creative
expression was incorporated into the decoration of hotels,
restaurants and public areas in Cancun, Cozumel and
the Riviera Maya.

Renato
