Renato´s
latest project
Since October of last year , Renato and his Mayan Carving team have been transforming designs into large murals and fountain sculptures which were recently installed in a private home in Leon, Guanajuato, located in north central México. His theme of "Modern Fantasy" compliments the architectural patterns which he helped to modify in order to give uniformity to his expression. Most of the work was done in the Cancun workshop and sent by trailer to its final destination. In all there were 6 murals measuring 39 mts2 (400 sq. ft.) and 3 fountain sculptures. The total weight was approximately 16 tons. The stairway bannister was carved on site. Committed in body and soul to this project during an eight month period, Renato was given a great deal of freedom to express himself. As a result he was able to create monumental forms that were very personal in nature. "The Death ofOur Gods" is probably his most important mural to date. It represents a very interesting allegory, reflecting two contradictory concepts at the same time. On the one hand, it shows the biblical figure of St. George slaying the dragon while, on the other hand, it depicts the conquest of Mexico. The scene shows a Spanish soldier on a horse thrusting his spear through the plumed serpent which, in many prehispanic cultures, represents their messiah. In general , the León project was an extraordinary passage through fantastic worlds that, far from being a fairy tale or mythology, form an integral , athough effusive part of our world. Once again Renato was able to harmonize monumental work with organic architecture. The elegance and audacity of this communion of art and space reminds us of Gaudi.

The Mayan Calendar
Prophesies
The Sacred Mayan Tzolkin and Tun calendars, known as the Mayan Long Count Calendars, have over the last few years, gained more and more people's attention around the world. Possibly, this is a consequence of the all too human tendency to focus on impending catastrophes, such as was imagined at the turn of the new century (which we all just went through). On October 28th, 2011 the Mayan Calendars are due to come to an end and this would be reason enough to set some to worrying. I personally believe there is a much bigger reason for this increased attention. The Mayan culture has had its allure for people from all over the globe. We are fascinated by the method and attitude in which we believe they lived... in a special harmony with all of nature. In some way they lived in magic, somewhat removed from the physical world while treading very lightly upon the Earth. Most people who have studied the Maya, hold the vision of the Classic Mayan culture as a beacon shining from the past, to light a path of hope for all mankind. We feel an attraction to the Maya that can't quite be explained in physical terms. What was it or is it, which gives this culture its mystique? The very core of their civilization is the source of this wonder. It is the Calendar system of the Maya and the profound astrological and prophetic nature of this system that attracts the most attention. As well it should. Very recently, critical scientific discoveries have been made which show that the Mayan Calendar has in fact been the schedule of the unfolding of our Universe for the last 15 billion years. There will be much more information on this available to the entire world during the next couple of years. To be continued... Ian Xel Lungold Ian Xel Lungold is a lecturer on the Mayan calendar. He frequently gives talks on television and radio shows. You can contact him at ian@mayanmajix.com or check out his web site on our links page.

Adam Dorfman, this season´s featured artist, has had several oil paintings and iron sculptures on exposition since December of last year. His unique personal style has been greatly appreciated by our Gallery visitors. Recently, two of his paintings were purchased: "Bien Contento" ("Completely Content") and "Esperanza" ("Hope"). Adam and his brother Renato are presently working together on a project in connection with radical ecology and the preservation of our planet. |
