The "Discovery Channel" at the Gallery This year , Entrada a filming company from Montreal, Canada, was contracted by the Discovery Channel to make a 26 part documentary series on Latin America, with a focus on tourism and gastronomy. This documentary, which is to be aired at the beginning of 2002, includes nine half hour segments covering different aspects of life and culture in Mexico. At the end of last month filming took place on the Yucatan Peninsula in S.E. Mexico. It included the colonial city of Merida , capital of Yucatan State, the flamingos on the Island of Celestun and the Mayan ruins of Uxmal. The following day the team travelled to Cancun , in the State of Quintana Roo, where they spent 3.5 hours interviewing Renato and filming his Gallery. Click here. Although the plan was to film some of his sculpture work down the coast, the next day, inclement weather made that impossible. We´ll keep you posted regarding the release date of the actual documentary. |

"The Triumph of Corn" Corn has not only been a staple food for the Mexican people for more than 2,000 years, it has long been revered for it`s religious implications as well. The prehispanic tribes believed that corn was a gift from God and delivered to them by their messiah (Kukulcan for the Mayans). Using this as his theme, Renato expresses this reverence as he shows Yuncax, the God of Corn, emerging from the husk of the plant itself. Measuring 25 feet high when finished , it will be the tallest sculpture south of Cancun. Thanks to the vision and cultural interest of Pablo Piñero, the creator and owner of the Bahia Principe Hotel chain, who personally contracted Renato, the work began onsite in the lobby of the Bahia Principe Hotel Akumal on June 25, 2001. 1" thick rebar is being used to give strength to the structure which will need to withstand any threat of hurricane force winds. Renato and his team of Mayan sculptors will be living at the Hotel during the next 6 weeks , working 12 hours a day, attempting to complete 3 months work in half the time, thus permitting the Hotel lobby to be open for the summer high season.Click here. To see the artist´s rendition of the work as well as a photo of the finished model. Photos of the finished sculpture will be seen in the September-October Newsletter. |
